Over a quarter of the class, and both the teachers, went out paddling with the Canadians in Spirit Dancer. It was great fun!

Some people are missing from the photographs, but we all got our John Muir Discover Award and also a Dolphin Diploma from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS).
Here are some of the class with their John Muir Awards.
We spent the whole of the 4th term working towards the John Muir Award. It also taught people about keeping safe at sea. We heard it described as AWESOME and SPECTACULAR afterwards. We were very proud!
We held a raffle at the assembly and raised nearly £200 for the lifeboat. We wrote a song (words and music) and performed it too.

When we got back into school after break we found that a parcel had arrived from our link school, Outma Sqilx Cultural School in Penticton in the Okanagan Region of British Columbia. We were really excited!
We took turns taking things out of the parcel. There were lots of things and everyone got some hockey cards, a bookmark and aUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5773216032015509746.post-22510274706894419262010-06-29T14:12:00.000+01:002010-06-29T14:12:22.971+01:00Canadian Day part 1 - Pipes & salutes in the Spirit DancerFor the first part of our Canadian Day the Spirit Dancer Canadian canoe came to school to visit us. Some Candians - Chris, Barbara and Bob - came too to tell us all about it. It's 42 feet long - that's nearly 13 metres long!
We all climbed in and were given paddles to hold.
Chris showed us how we would paddle the canoe - and also how to do a salute.
Mrs MacNab was in the skipper's seat.

You can read about it here. This week it was time to dig them up!
Mrs MacNab tricked us - she wrote on the daily plan 'problem solving' and made us think we were doing maths! She gave us clues and told us we had to work together to solve the problem. When we realised it would lead us to the time capsule we got Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5773216032015509746.post-58975678877541247842010-06-27T18:23:00.000+01:002010-06-27T18:23:48.153+01:00News from the last weekThis blog entry is about the more 'everyday' things that happened in the last week. There will be special blog entries about the rest of the week's events too.
Here we are about to start our coastal food tasting. We've had a food tasting for every topic so we had to have one for the coast too. We were hoping for salmon but we got seaweed instead. Do you like our totem pole? We made it in art. We looked at pictures of some Canadian totem poles and painted small ones first, then designed and made our big Orcadian totem pole.
Here are some of the paintings people made.

The Kwu'sukwna?qinx canoe also has designs painted on it and we've seen pictures of it. Some of the people from the Kwu'sukwna?qinx canoe family designed and painted artwork onto the Spirit Dancer canoe.
Mrs MacNab challenged us to design some artwork to go onto a canoe (our own canoe, if we had one). It was a bit too cold to have a picnic lunch outside, so we had it in the classroom instead, then went over to Picky for the races.
There was a cold wind, but the rain stayed off and we kept fairly warm as we were racing. We think our Mums and Dads might have been a bit cold watching us though!

We'll soon be in P4/5! We met our new teacher this week - it was very exciting because she took us to see some chicks in her classroom. We saw one hatching, and another 2 that were eating food. They were cute.
We're still rehearsing hard for the class assembly.
We've been finding out about how different creatures develop. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5773216032015509746.post-45063527088674174162010-06-18T10:43:00.004+01:002010-06-18T10:53:15.477+01:00Leaf Masks

We did canoeing and lots of team challenges. Can you guess what the best bit was? You'll never guess......
Mrs MacNab couldn't guess either. It was when Neil (one of the instructors) put his hat behind his ears! It was so funny - he looked like an elf!

We've learned a lot of interesting things from our coastal Show and Tell this term. Joe did a great talk about lighthouses this week and brought in lighthouse painting and model lighthouse he had made. That made us wonder how many lighthouses there were in Orkney. We looked it up on wikipedia and discovered there were 7 - but we're sure we can name more than 7!
We learned that you can't always Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5773216032015509746.post-22960680164805177132010-06-13T15:33:00.000+01:002010-06-14T22:10:24.550+01:00An active weekWe've had a very active week, with Walliwall and Sports Day (despite the afternoon races being postponed to next week).
As well as those exciting events we had a visitor this week - Cara came to visit us! She's 10 months old, and we were able to see if our ideas about what a 10 month old baby can do were correct. She was cleverer than we had expected - and mischievious too. The races in the afternoon had to be postponed because of the rain - they'll be held next Friday afternoon instead.
In the morning we went out onto the track first. We did a relay race with some unusual batons to pass!
We supported each other ...
After that, we went inside to play parachute games. It was great!

In maths we're using money to solve problems and in real-life situations - like planning fictional parties.
In health we've been thinking about how we grow and change, and the different things we can do as we get older.
We spent some time discussing things that newborn babies can do, things that 10 month old babies can do, 3 year olds and what we can do now. We had a great trip to Birsay, studying the biodiversity of the coast there. We predicted that we would find different things to Scapa - and we were right. We didn't expect to find so many hermit crabs though - we found over 50 in one rockpool!
We did a Bag the Bruck. The beach looked clean but we still managed to find 52 pieces of bruck in 5 minutes!

We create lots of different models and machines.
Some people enjoy doing craft in Golden Time. Can you guess what we're making?

We're practising working out change.

Becky shows us her animations.
We watched a new animation she had made with lots of different materials. She had made the sound effects from fabric, a sewing machine, poppers and a zip! Then we looked at some other films which she had found which used fruit and vegetables and even cupcakes!
