Lots of fun

We've been having lots of fun again.

Here we are in drama, acting out scenes to show good ways and bad ways of responding to people. We had lots of ideas of good ways to act and we are trying to remember good ways to deal with things in the playground too.

In PE with Mrs MacNab we have started doing tennis. It's great fun!

In PE on Fridays we're doing gymnastics with Mr Berry.

Here we are doing listening skills.

In our topic we've been finding out why the moon looks like it changes shape. Do you know why?

Some people pretended to be the Sun, Earth and Moon so we could act it out.

In our topic we've been finding out about stars and constellations and some groups have made their own constellation and written a star myth about it. Here is one group working with Miss Persidou (who is from Greece).

We made 'pinprick pictures' of 2 constellations - Orion and The Plough - to help us find them in the night sky at home. Do you know what they look like?

In maths we've been working hard at multiplication and division. Here we are doing loop cards and trying to get a new record time.

P4 learned lots of 'magic tricks' to do with the 9x table.

P4 were challenged to teach Mrs Scott the 9x table ausing as many 'magic tricks' as possible. How many different ways do you think they used?

Another fun week in P3/4.

Magic potions, science experiments and more.

We learned a new game in Drama. It was like rock, paper, scissors but we had to pretend to be people from Greek myths and do actions. Can you guess who we are?

We used the myth masks again. We asked the minotaur if he liked pizza.

Mesuda said she liked her red eyes but if she wanted a different colour she could paint them a different colour each day. We thought that sounded cool.

Zeus and Daedalus were asked lots of questions about their favourite food and what they liked doing. Everyone was good at pretending to be the different characters and improvising (quickly making up) answers.

We did a science experiment. We had to get water, containers, apples and marbles. We used maths to help us because we had to measure water and weigh things.

We found that when an apple floated in the water it made water spill out of the container - and the water that spilled out weighed the same as the apple.

Some groups tried the same experiment with marbles in a yoghurt pot and found that the weight of the marbles in the yoghurt pot floating on the water was the same as the weight of the water which spilled out.

We were quite surprised to find that 1/2 kg of water was the same as 1/2 litre of water and 1kg of water was the same as 1l of water!

We did another experiement with marbles as well and then we had to write a report about it.

We were interested to find out that the first experiment is to do with our Ancient Greece topic from last term because a man called Archimedes worked this out years ago. He was Greek and he had to find out if the King's crown was really gold. He got into his bath and water spilled out and he realised he could do an experiement like the one we did to find out whether the crown was gold. He was so excited that he jumped out of his bath and ran down the street shouting "Eureka! Eureka!" (it means "I've got it! I've got it!"). The funny thing was - he didn't put on any clothes before he ran down the street! We wondered what all the other people thought of him?

In maths we are still practising our times tables. Sometimes we do a table square and try to beat our time from the week before.

P3 had more practice at measuring capacity and used it to solve problems.

P4 made their own magic potions. They had to measure small amounts like 50ml very carefully.

In PE with Mrs MacNab we are making up our own games and learning to change the rules so that other people can join in or to make the game easier or more difficult. We enjoy it!

P3 are teaching P4 their game here.

In PE with Mrs Cromarty we are still doing gymnastics. We love it too!

How high can you climb?

Here we are doing craft in Golden Time. We were making recycled winter pictures - using things like old wallpaper and pieces of string. We thought that was very environmentally friendly.

Ancient Greece and lots of maths

We seem to have linked almost all our work to Ancient Greece and maths this week.

We had a Greek food tasting on Tuesday. Most people tried something new and got a sticker. One pupil tried everything! Mrs MacNab was very impressed.

Some people really didn't like some of the food, especially the octopus and olives. Mrs MacNab didn't like the octopus either! Mrs Stanger said the olives were the worst.

We had bread, white grape juice, red grape juice, black olives, green olives, figs, octopus, goat and sheep's milk cheese (feta cheese), Greek butter beans, loukamis (like Turkish delight but very very sweet) and honey sesame seed snaps.

Do you think they are enjoying the food?

In Drama we worked in groups. We used props to help us make up stories. The props all became characters - like a Scottish person (kilt), dragon (wings) and lots more and then we made up a story using all of our characters. It was fun.

In maths we have been learning about length. P3 have been estimating and measuring in metres and finding out if things (or people) are longer than about a metre, about a metre or shorter than a metre.

P4 have been measuring in centimetres and measuring objects with curved sides.

We did Ancient Greek maths and helped Pythagoras, a mathematician from Ancient Greece, prove his theory about right angles triangles.

In PE we are still practising for the class Olympics. We did javelin and Boccia this week. We had to measure how far the javelin went - so that was maths too!

We measured using a very long measuring tape.

P4 made the fish and they are all about a metre long so we could use them to measure the javelin throws.

 We used a measuring tape to see whose balls were nearer the jack (white ball) in Boccia.

P4 have been learning the 6x table - here we are practising it and testing each other (using timers).

We used Greek water clocks this week to time our talks (that's in a different blog entry). Abbie thinks we should use the 5 minute water clock if anyone loses 5 minutes of Golden Time next week. Mrs MacNab hopes we don't have to use the clock!
