The tree octopus
On Thursday we got out the laptops and looked at a tree octopus website and found lots of information on it. Mrs MacNab asked us if we would like to adopt one. Most people said yes but James said it looked disgusting, Alanah said it too. There were lots of pictures and one of them had a tree octopus in a Christmas tree. Then Mrs MacNab told us it wasn’t real. We all felt so stupid!

The website was very realistic and I'm not surprised everyone thought it was real. Nobody was stupid! Everyone learned that not everything we read on websites is true.
Sometimes books are not true as well because they may be out-of-date. Sometimes things in newspapers are not true because people can write anything they want to persuade you that they are right. Mrs MacNab could write that P3/4 are a very bad class but that wouldn't mean it was true (it isn't true!).
We are learning to think about where information comes from.

The tree octopus lives in a tree. We do not know what they eat but do you know the tree octopus does not exist? People filmed real octopus and put them in trees or used pretend octopus toys.
