Sports Day

We had a fun morning of activites over at Picky. The races in the afternoon had to be postponed because of the rain - they'll be held next Friday afternoon instead.

In the morning we went out onto the track first. We did a relay race with some unusual batons to pass!

We supported each other ...

After that, we went inside to play parachute games. It was great!

Here we are playing sharks and lifeguards.

 This is the mushroom.

We also did other games and played Westray dodgeball.

We're hoping for dry weather for next week.

Wonderful Walliwall!

Just like real canoe families we worked in teams at Walliwall to paddle our own canoes!
We will post more photos and some video soon.

Biodiversity and babies

As always, it's been a busy week.

In maths we're using money to solve problems and in real-life situations - like planning fictional parties.

In health we've been thinking about how we grow and change, and the different things we can do as we get older.

We spent some time discussing things that newborn babies can do, things that 10 month old babies can do, 3 year olds and what we can do now. We're also thinking about things we'll be able to do when we're older - like drive a car and vote in an election.

Mrs Wolanska brought Jan in to visit us. We were able to check whether we were correct about the things a newborn baby could do, as Jan is just 3 weeks old. Here he is with his Mum and proud big sisters.

It was sunny on Thursday, so we were able to do Show and Tell outside again. Sometimes the traffic was noisy, but everyone has got much more confident at speaking in front of an audience so we were able to hear everyone clearly.
We're still working on biodiversity. Now we're making PowerPoint slideshows about the biodiversity you find around Orkney's coasts. We're hoping to put them on the blog when they're finished and to show them to parents at the class assembly.

We're still working on the props for the class assembly - we have to work together to make things. We had our first full rehersal this week too.

Here we are in music, writing the music for our lifeboat song.

We're practising for sports day when we get the chance. The 3 legged race is hard!

Do you think we're having fun?

Birsay land art competition - the winners are announced....

We can now reveal the winners of the land art competition which we asked you to vote on here. We were very pleased with the number of votes and all the comments that people added to our blog.

The voting was very close for quite a few days, then the puffin started to pull ahead - and it was declared the eventual winner when the poll closed, with 20 votes out of the total of 47 votes cast.

Here are the winners with their prizes.

Would you like to see us making our land art? Here we are ...

The quad bike looks much better with the drivers on it!

They had to spend a long time searching for the right shapes of stones for the wheels.

The starfish and spiral were both quite big - these photos should give an idea of the size.

Will you make something the next time you go to the beach?

Birsay!

We had a great trip to Birsay, studying the biodiversity of the coast there. We predicted that we would find different things to Scapa - and we were right. We didn't expect to find so many hermit crabs though - we found over 50 in one rockpool!

We did a Bag the Bruck. The beach looked clean but we still managed to find 52 pieces of bruck in 5 minutes!

How many different types of seaweed can you find?

Can you name them all?

Here's some pictures of the fun we had rockpooling.

Mrs MacNab paddled into a rockpool to photograph this sea anemone with the waterproof camera ...

... and her feet got wet! She had a hole in her wellies!

We had a great time.

The sun even came out and there was lots of blue sky.

The hermit crab in the pink top shell was most people's favourite.

This is the hermit crab that nipped Mrs MacNab!

We found lotd of interesting things like crabs, goose barnacles and sea hares.

We love rockpooling!
